Karel Malivánek is not only a glass artist but a painter and musician as well. He has had numerous art exhibits and has performed in concerts.
The Beránek Studio is located on the border of Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic. In the last 1930s, Emanuel Beránek and his brother established a glassworks in the Sudetenland and were forced to move to Moravia during the German occupation. Raw materials at that time were scarce so they mixed bits of bottle glass with charcoal. Needless to say this limited their production yet at the same time stimulated their artistic creativity.
During the Communist era the Beránek Studio enjoyed a unique position. Because it did not fit any particular category when all industries were being nationalized, it was scheduled to be closed . Fortunately, supporters campaigned strongly to prevent this. The Studio was then transferred from the Ministry of Industry to the Ministry of Education and Culture and was incorporated into the Center for Folk Art and Artistic Work. It was not allowed to create any products made by the nationalized glass industry. Consequently, it specialized in hot-shaped glass and served as a prototype-modeling workshop. |
